JUNE NEWSLETTER

Good news-GREAT NEWS- the North Fork of the Kings River has water to the Crescent Weir and by-pass just north of the Club. The last two years it has been blocked at the Army Weir which is about one mile east of Highway 41. My brother Mike, who is an avid fisherman that will fish any pot-hole available, discovered this last week. He lives about one mile from LSC. Our lake and irrigation well, which is only about 30 feet deep, are recharged from this area of the river.

John Patton Jr. has made some new laminated sighs for the rifle-pistol ranges and did a great job of lettering and added some personal highlights. These are the “NO SHOTGUNS ALLOWED ON RIFLE RANGES” signs. Fred Manahan cleaned one of the existing “RULES” signs and sprayed it with a sealant that I purchased. My wife suggested this as she uses it to seal and enhance her yard signs. It blocks most of the UV rays and brightens the lettering. If this works out we will do more of them. We need some new signs made for the ranges. Anyone have an expertise in this area?

The new cardboard was delivered for making target frames. Conway Truck Lines delivered it on Monday the 16/th. We didn’t think it would all fit in the cardboard room as the Board had decided to get a “double order” because Diane at California Cardboard and Container in Fresno gave me a price of $1.84/ sheet for our standard order of 350 pieces but we could get it for $1.40/ sheet if we ordered 700. Last order cost us $1.43/ sheet for the 350 count. Sunday evening Margaret had cleaned out the storage area and rearranged it. When the truck arrived, the driver lowered the 250# pallets on the lift gate and rolled them into the tractor shed. That saved a lot of man-handling. The following day Margaret got all of it in the cardboard room. Good job Margaret. On delivery day while waiting for the truck, Brother Mike and I worked on the trap range sprinklers and he brought his “BIG HONK’IN HONDA” wheeled weed-eater. While I fixed the # 9 sprinkler circuit he cut down the Iron weed and anything else that got in front of him. Had to keep him from the trees or it would have made mulch of them. A gopher had eaten through the 1/2”plastic plug in one of the sprinklers and the line wasn’t broken. I found a metal replacement in the shop and they work fine now. All nine circuits have been programmed.

Victor Torres donated three bales of hay to get us by in the short term. Hay prices are very high this year and the cows and calves are gong to need to eat some of the pasture and get off the gravy train.

We had to replace the pressure switch on the irrigation well again. This was my fault. It was set at 55#’s with a 25# variation for the activation. To get the sprinklers to work at the trap range it needs to be at least 65#’s with a 15# to 20# variation. I had the right nut driver for the high side but had to use a small crescent wrench for the variation mode. Small flash-bang and Margaret,(looking over my shoulder), jumped and said “Oh s_ _t”, but the wrench had a rubberized handle and the only damage was to the points of the switch. Got that replaced and the high side is 68#’s and it kicks on at 48#’s. The trap range sprinklers now rotate very well.

Frank Alvardez donated his time and helped Margaret clean the cardboard room and put the new supply inside. He also helped with cleanup around the ranges and made some wood storage boxes for nails and screws. He put the belts back on the Craftsman mower also. Thanks Frank, all help is appreciated. Did you get some of those breakfast burritos? Damn good.

The Promatic trap machine is becoming a pain in the rectum. Brother Mike, (BM), and I have spent 5 or 6 days working on it and it works well sometimes and breaks all of the targets on any given occasion. I have talked to Bill, Nick, and two others at Promatic and we can’t seem to solve the problem. The throwing arm and nylon edge have been replaced as well as the dampener for the carrousel and launch spring.. We have timed the machine several times and adjusted the roller sensor that positions the arm. Nick, via cell phone, coached us as we lowered the launch deck by about 1mm. This helped temporarily. BM and I adjusted the tension on the carrousel and timed it again. On the 28/th, BM, David Serpa and I shot about 400 birds and it only broke four. According to Promatic, anything less than 5% with the new bio-degradable birds is acceptable. Later that day, Bill Pavao was shooting and Margaret called to tell me that it was doing fine for a while and then went to breaking all of the birds again. Sasha, my mini-schnauzer, (I am really getting desperate for help) and I went back to check the problem. After some adjustments it seemed to work fine but I asked Margaret to close the range until the problem is solved if it happens again. I hate to see our members lose so many targets to breakage. BM and I are also getting tired of working in the trap house staring at 7 in the morning until it gets to hot to stay in there around noon. Hey guys, and gals, does anyone have some suggestions? Promatic has informed me that they know of no dealer in the Valley, as the one in Fresno closed several years ago. They have said to call anytime as they would like to help us solve the problem without sending the machine back to them or an expensive service call. Promatic USA is in Mo. Little help here PLEASE.

Bill Pavao who I mentioned above is a Project Superintendent for Fisher and Sons Inc. in Burlington, Washington. They are construction contractors for large warehouses, storage and other buildings. They will be working in the Valley for several months. Bill has offered to bring a few of his guys to put the hip roofs on the skeet houses and the floor in the high house of the new lighted trap-skeet range that is under construction. He has the tools and LSC will provide the materials. He needs some volunteers to do light jobs such as cutting boards and carrying material to his crew so they can get it done quickly. Donuts in the morning and lunch and drinks will be provided on both days. Bill thought about 4 or 5 guys should be enough and they think they can get it done in two days. He has tentatively set the work days as Saturday July 26/th and Sunday the 27/th. If we get more people we can do some cleanup around the area. Notify Margaret or me if you are coming as we need to know how many to feed and don’t want to have people walking over one another. We  hope to get the last door frame in and the doors mounted also.

Don Moran of Kings County Probation was at LSC last week and brought a juvenile offender work crew. They mowed the park area and did a lot of general cleanup. I filled out the paperwork so that LSC can get Community Service persons working at LSC. They require that the organization be a non-profit. We fit all of the criteria to use these persons and I made Margaret the Supervisor for LSC. She will document their hours worked and do the sign-off sheet. I delivered the paperwork to the Kings County Sheriffs office on the19/th. Kudos’ to Margaret for getting the information on this program.

The last small-bore match of the season was on the 14/th, (1600 pt. match), with 5 shooters. Let’s hope we can get more in September when the new season starts by doing some advertising.

LSC will have a booth at the Kings County Fair which runs from July 10/th through July 13/th. We will be in the Commercial Building which has coolers, thank you- thank you. We could use some volunteers to help set up and take down the booth and to work the fair. Thursday and Friday the booth must be open from 5:00 p.m. until the building closes at around 10:00p.m. On Saturday and Sunday it must be open from noon to 10:p.m. Last year we had two shifts on the weekend so no one had to work more than five hours. We have a limited number of exhibitor’s passes which allows entry for one into the Fair and reserved parking. We usually reserve these for those who volunteer to work several days or multiple shifts. Exhibitors may start setting up booths three days prior to the opening. Last year we set up two days early and did the finishing touches the day before so it only took a few hours each day. We dismantled the booth the day following the Fair.

BM and I removed the glass display case from the Range House. It has been leaking and the cork and plywood backing was rotted. I delivered it to Ken Rahn and he is rebuilding it and making it leak proof. Ken excels at this kind of project and he has all of those nice tools to do it with. UHG- UHG, a regular Tim Allen. Hey, thanks Ken

LATE BREAKING NEWS; I had missed most of the California State Shoot in Kingsburg because BM and I had spent the week trying to get our trap machine on line. On the last day, Sunday the 29/th, Ken Rahn and I decided to go. The vendors had all left the day before but I saw a White Flyer booth and went over to talk with them about our problems. Ken Herndon, J&S Wholesale Sales Manager, listened to my problems and gave me a few suggestions. That is where LSC buys their White Flyer targets from. Then he directed me to Homer Hansen of Hansen Enterprises located Mohave, Calif. They are a welding and fabrication shop and also do truck parts and service. He is a dealer for Promatic traps and I believe Pat traps also. He supplied machines for the State Shoot and kept them running. Homer agreed to come to LSC after he loaded his machines at Kingsburg after the shoot and check out our machine. In less than an hour he had it working like a well timed clock. The new parts BM and I had put on were fine, but it sure needed some fine adjustment. The major problem is that you can only adjust the machine for one type of target as they are all different. Our machine is adjusted for White Flyer targets only. Champion, Remington STS or most others will break on launch as the knife arms that separate them from the carrousel will take a small chip out of the bottom. It is only about 1mm but that is enough. White Flyer is available at LSC for our cost or at many retail outlets. Ken also informed me that in September White Flyer will have the Wal-Mart contract again. Homer knows Bill and Nick, who I talked to at Promatic in Mo. He stated that our machine is in excellent shape and Promatic is very good product. Thank God, at least I can sleep at night again.
